Gift cards are meant to be a convenient way to shop or share a gift, but scammers have turned them into one of their favorite tools for fraud. At Michigan United Credit Union, we want our members to know how these scams work and how to stay safe.
Scammers pose as trusted people or organizations and pressure you to buy gift cards as payment. Once you share the numbers on the back of the card, your money is gone. Common tactics include:
Impersonation: Someone claims to be your boss, a government agency, or even a family member.
Urgency: You’re told you must act immediately to solve a problem or avoid penalties.
Secrecy: The scammer tells you not to discuss the request with anyone.
🚩 A caller, email, or text asks you to pay a bill, fine, or fee with gift cards.
🚩 Someone claims you’ve won a prize but must buy a gift card to claim it.
🚩 You’re told to scratch off the back of a card and send the numbers or photos.
🚩 The request comes with pressure: “Do this right now or else.”
✅ Remember: No legitimate company or government agency will ever demand gift cards as payment.
✅ Verify first: Call the person or business directly using a trusted phone number.
✅ Slow down: Scammers thrive on urgency—take a moment to think before you act.
✅ Don’t share gift card codes: Treat them like cash—once they’re gone, they can’t be replaced.
Stop communication immediately.
