Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the way we live, work, and communicate. Unfortunately, scammers are also using AI to trick people. At Michigan United Credit Union, we want to make sure you and your family know what to look for and how to protect yourselves.
AI scams use advanced technology to make fake voices, emails, or videos look and sound real. Criminals are using these tools to:
Imitate voices of loved ones asking for money.
Create fake “official” emails or texts that look like they’re from your bank or employer.
Generate fake photos or videos (“deepfakes”) to spread misinformation or trick people into sharing personal details.
Be on alert if you notice:
🚩 A loved one suddenly calls/texts saying they need money urgently.
🚩 Emails or messages that look slightly “off”—odd grammar, strange links, or a sense of urgency.
🚩 Video calls or recordings where the face or voice doesn’t seem quite right.
🚩 Requests to pay with gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.
✅ Pause before acting. If something feels urgent and emotional, take a breath. Scammers want you to rush.
✅ Verify. Call your loved one or the company directly on a trusted number—not the one given in the message.
✅ Be cautious with links. Don’t click suspicious attachments or URLs.
✅ Set up account alerts. Get instant notifications from your Michigan United CU accounts for unusual activity.
✅ Talk with family. Agree on a “safe word” you can use if someone calls asking for help with money.
We actively monitor for fraud, invest in security technology, and provide education to help you spot scams. But your awareness is your first line of defense. If you suspect fraud, contact us immediately
AI scams may be high-tech, but the solution is simple: stay cautious, verify requests, and don’t let anyone pressure you into acting fast. Together, we can protect your money and your peace of mind.
